High-speed police chases put the wrong people in harm’s way
Chases simply aren’t worth risk
When will police finally realize high-speed chases don’t work? Most of the time, innocent bystanders and others like the Fort Worth policeman now in the hospital are hurt or killed. (June 15, 2A, “Fort Worth officer hit by car during pursuit; suspect arrested”)
No potential lawbreaker is worth it. There are other ways to apprehend the person.

Trinity Metro deserves support
Instead of continuing the Fort Worth police slush fund, let’s put our money toward improving the city for everyone.
Proposition A is on the July 14 ballot to renew the Crime Control and Prevention District for 10 years. The Fort Worth Sierra Club recommends voting no and petitioning the City Council to allocate the half-cent tax to Trinity Metro instead.
This would put Fort Worth in line with other major cities’ transit funding. Expanding and improving transit would improve our air quality and provide for transit equity. Fast, reliable, low-cost transit would help all city residents, including communities of color and low-income populations.
We need to ensure that all residents can safely and reliably travel to and from their jobs, schools and other needs.
- John MacFarlane, Chairman, Greater Fort Worth Sierra Club, Fort Worth
Don’t play around with protests
It’s time Mayor Betsy Price and Police Chief Ed Kraus quit playing political games and let officers do their jobs. The ongoing protests should not result in disruption to businesses or in families being afraid to venture out in public. Appeasement of criminal conduct is never a sound approach, and someone needs to demonstrate leadership.

Keep racists out of police
We need to weed out the racists from law enforcement and not hire racists in the future. No matter how good rules for the police are, a racist will disregard them. Those who do should be fired. Hiring practices can be devised to identify racists, and that would certainly be justification not to hire.

Protest virus isn’t a thing now?
So, let me get this straight. Now, the national and local media are back on the COVID-19 beat, and any spike in cases is because of Gov. Greg Abbott opening up the economy, rallies for President Donald Trump or going to a Little League game without a mask.
It has nothing to do with the thousands of protesters marching through our streets, ignoring Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. That’s Pulitzer Prize stuff right there.

Leadership void on face masks
President Donald Trump and Gov. Greg Abbott refuse to require face masks, relying on people to voluntarily do the right thing. The government requires we not shoot people because it saves lives, requires students to get immunizations because it saves lives, requires drivers to wear seat belts because it saves lives and requires people not drink and drive because it saves lives.
This cannot be about politics. This is about leadership.
