I opposed entrance fees at the zoo. I won’t make that mistake with the Botanic Garden
I am tired of the guessing
Can you media clowns and politicians just stop it? Yes, this coronavirus is a problem, but fewer than 1% of Americans have tested positive, and only a tiny percentage have died.
Yes, things could get worse, but things could get better, too. At some point, America has to get moving again. Stop with your opinions and guesswork and stick to the real facts.

Dumb can be fatal to others
Jeers to the idiots who refuse to adhere to steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Police should issue heavy fines to anyone who refuses to stay away from others. Those who don’t wear masks and gloves in public are just plain stupid.

If you read the words this way
A headline on Page 8A Monday: “Jet crashes in Canada during airshow to bolster morale.” I’m sure it has been pointed out that a jet crash would never boost morale.

Who’s doing right thing here?
I could not see a greater contrast than the one between the news story “Nurses from Texas join virus fight in New York” and Bud Kennedy’s commentary “Gun activists’ Texas stunts put pressure on Gov. Abbott” on Page 1B of Sunday’s paper.
On one hand, we have two young women putting their lives on the line, selflessly serving their fellow human beings in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, we see gun-toting vigilantes (all men) in Texas brandishing their AR-15s, defying state health orders and threatening their fellow citizens if they don’t get their way.
From these two pieces, it was clear which part of the population was doing the right thing.

Learned my lesson from zoo
I support a proposal by our City Council to let the Botanical Research Institute of Texas operate the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and to charge entrance fees. I essentially voted by paying for a membership. And donations to BRIT are tax-deductible.
A similar controversy arose many years ago when entrance fees were proposed for the Fort Worth Zoo. I was part of the opposition then, and I was wrong. The zoo and Fort Worth both saw great improvements. The result for the Botanic Garden would be the same.

Mail voting has worked for years
For many years, members of the military have exercised their voting rights via mail. No one has ever accused them of cheating. Republicans are afraid because they know the numbers are against them.
Everyone should protect themselves by voting by mail. What’s wrong with Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton?

One sure thing with a mask
On the columns Sunday by Cynthia M. Allen and Mac Engel on Page 5B (“Mixed messages on masks have led to coronavirus confusion,” “Wearing a mask is reasonable, and not worthy of a protest”): I may not wear a mask in public to lessen my chances of contracting the COVID-19 virus, but I really hope the people I come near are wearing theirs.
I don’t think my mask will prevent the virus from entering my nose or throat, although it may add a small level of protection. I do think that if you sneeze or cough while wearing a mask, the spread will be much less than coughing or sneezing into your elbow.
In other words, wear your mask in public to protect me, and I will wear my mask in public to protect you. That is the reason for masks. That is not a mixed message.
