Michael Flynn evading justice is a canary in the coal mine

What is the bigger picture?

With the Justice Department dropping its case against Gen. Michael Flynn, are we no longer a country of laws? (May 8, 10A, “Justice Department dropping Flynn’s case”)

If the world’s premier democracy falls to this level, what does this mean for the future of democracy everywhere? We will ultimately survive this pandemic, but will we survive this presidency?

- Michael Estep, Hurst

Flynn belonged out front

The Star-Telegram should be castigated strongly for publishing the story “Justice Department dropping Flynn’s case” on 10A Friday. The Dallas Morning News and The Wall Street Journal properly put that news on the front page.

A parallel from communism

If you have not seen “Chernobyl” on HBO, I highly recommend it. This will show you how the Communist Party of the Soviet Union handled a crisis that affected the whole world. This is probably what China did with the COVID-19 outbreak: Lie, deny, cover up and stay silent until it is too late.

Communist leaders do not care about you or even their own citizens, only the image of the party.

- James Greer, Fort Worth

Liberals just want to control

I will never understand the liberal mind. Our governor has begun opening up the Texas economy, and the liberal leadership in places such as Dallas complain it is too early and not yet safe to do so. They even jailed a woman for opening her hair salon in defiance of an executive order — not a law voted on by the Texas Legislature. (May 8, 1A, “Hair salon owner is released by state’s top court”) But the same liberals won’t prosecute anyone for stealing less than $750 from a business.

If people decide to open their businesses, adult customers are capable of deciding whether they feel safe enough to patronize these businesses and not have bureaucrats dictate where and when they spend their money.

- Richard Downey, Euless

Orders don’t apply so evenly

I suppose we can all ignore any future executive orders from Gov. Greg Abbott now. His words no longer matter, and apparently the rule of law doesn’t matter — especially if you are white.

I doubt Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton would have jumped through hoops as fast to defend a salon owner who was a minority.

If you refuse to believe that white privilege exists, you are not paying attention.

Typhoid Mary back to work

Mary Mallon is remembered today as Typhoid Mary. The Irish immigrant infected about 50 people with typhoid fever, and at least three died. She was the first person in the United States known to have been an asymptomatic carrier of the disease.

Mallon refused to quit working as a cook. Much like many people today, she thought she had a “right” to continue spreading disease regardless of who was harmed. After all, she had to make a living, right?

Reactions to COVID-19 have illustrated how people who don’t learn from history are destined to repeat it.
