Letters: President Donald Trump cares about the American people, but Democrats don’t
Let the CEOs do their part
I applaud Democrats’ efforts to limit the bailout money for airlines and cruise lines. The airlines will ultimately need assistance, but I would like CEOs to use their money first. After all, many ordinary people run through their savings before they can get aid.
Top executives have had enormous salaries and bonuses for years. It’s time to give back. As for the cruise lines, let them build back up slowly. Their services are not essential.
We are in dire straits, and the money must go where it can serve the most citizens.

Trump cares and Democrats don’t
Democrats apparently thought unrelated goodies were more important than helping citizens in the economic rescue bill. Wouldn’t that money be better spent on the elderly, homeless veterans or our children?
President Donald Trump has always cared about the American people, and he’s shown it now more than ever. Republicans were ready to sign this bill long ago to put money in the hands of the American people. The Democrats were the ones holding it up.

Price sets the right tone
My local Texas Public Radio station included a report Thursday about the efforts of local governments to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, featuring an interview of Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. Fort Worth residents are mighty fortunate to have a leader who is as sensible, responsible and honest as Price.
I hope that the elected leadership in Washington soon will comprise people with her skills, sound judgment and courage.

A sewer line solution
It appears that, because of a shortage of toilet tissue, people are using many types of paper, and the results are unforeseen plumbing problems. (March 24, 4A, “Flushing other paper has the Fort Worth area all stopped up”)
We live in a neighborhood of 100-year-old houses, which were built with clay and cast-iron sewage lines. Tree roots find their ways into seams in the lines, and toilet paper catches on them. That builds up, and suddenly your toilet is backing up into the house.
It seems strange at first to put used paper in the wastebasket, but you get used to it. It is a simple solution to avoid a very nasty problem.

Put us back to work, Trump
Friday’s editorial cartoon compared the wartime leadership of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt to President Donald Trump’s leadership during the viral pandemic. Trump is shown holding a white flag, apparently referring to his allowing discussion of reopening the economy.
The Allies’ victory in World War II was due more than anything else to our ability to outproduce our enemies. So, the president should accept this cartoon as a compliment.

Slow response will cost lives
Three weeks ago, President Donald Trump bragged about how well we were doing with the coronavirus. Governors pleaded with the government for test kits, masks and ventilators. The self-proclaimed “wartime president” hesitated to invoke the Defense Production Act to procure these supplies and wanted to end shelter in place by Easter to save the economy.
The facts were finally drummed into his head, and he used the law to get General Motors to build ventilators, and he delayed relaxing shelter-in-place orders. His delays in acting have caused or will cause many deaths.
