Democrats, don’t lose me with Bernie Sanders’ nonsense

It’s all a question of priorities

It’s interesting that some letter writers allege our nation can’t afford the agenda proposed by Sen. Bernie Sanders. Yet I heard few complaints from these people about how to pay for President Donald Trump’s huge tax cut, which has ballooned the national debt.

We can’t afford not to have most of Sanders’ proposals implemented. Don’t we want a healthier, better-educated population that has more money to spend? With more equitable taxes on the super-wealthy and less bloated Pentagon spending, his programs could be funded.

Sanders is a hard no for me

Leave it to the left-wing democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders to claim he will create “up to 20 million jobs.” So, if he “creates” one job, he can check that box. Any candidate worth his or her salt will promise a minimum number of jobs. Why stop at 20 million, Bernie?

Texas, if you want to beat President Donald Trump, don’t fall for misleading tactics like this. Lean to the middle and grab people like me who absolutely won’t vote for far-left candidates such as Sanders.

Coronavirus weakness

I’m a 66-year-old man. Thanks to God and President Lyndon B. Johnson, I now have Medicare.

For many years, I worked as an independent contractor and had no health insurance. I couldn’t afford it. Today, about 28 million Americans lack coverage, and many bankruptcies are caused by high medical expenses. With the looming threat of the coronavirus, not only are people without access to medical care potentially at risk, but so are the rest of us who will come in contact with those who are don’t know why they are sick.

If this is not a good reason for all Americans to have adequate access to health care, I don’t know what is.

Pitts is indulging in hatred

I offer the following in response to Leonard Pitts Jr.’s column on Feb. 28, “The swarming certitude of Sanders voters” (13A):

I’m sad and angry that a journalist would make comments such as, “No terrorist group or foreign power poses this country a greater threat than its president.” I do not agree with the way our president tweets whatever is on his mind, but does it really warrant that kind of hatred and divisiveness?

Pitts promotes the very thing he rails against in his columns.

Turn back the clock on guns

A quick scan of Page 2A of the Feb. 25 Star-Telegram revealed stories about two shootings. (“Motorist shoots at another driver on Fort Worth highway”; “Man found shot, critically wounded in Fort Worth yard”) The past few years have seemed exceptional in the amount of gun violence. Hardly a day goes by without one or more shootings reported in the paper.

I owned guns 50 years ago, as did many, if not most, Americans. We understood reasonable rules are necessary for a civil society. I’ve witnessed cars at the side of the road and fists flying, and these days, there’s a good chance at least one gun will be involved.

It is time to return to reasonable controls on guns in public.
