So many problems with plans from Sanders and Warren
Sanders’ goals are big worries
I agree with the conclusion of Jay Ambrose’s Feb. 18 column, “Could Sanders be a lot worse than Trump?” (9A) Bear in mind, I went to James Madison High School in Brooklyn with now-Sen. Bernie Sanders. He graduated a year ahead of me.
We cannot afford the price tag for Sanders’ proposals. Who will pay for “Medicare for all,” free tuition in colleges and the Green New Deal? President Donald Trump will have a field day blasting Sanders on the campaign trail if he gets the Democratic Party’s nomination.
Do we need change? Most certainly from our current egocentric, dishonest president. But we need realistically achievable goals.

Granger just isn’t available
Totally missing from the Star-Telegram Editorial Board’s endorsement of Rep. Kay Granger in the 2020 primary was mention of her failure to provide her constituents with opportunities to hear about and question her work in Congress: no public meetings, no conference calls, limited attendance at public events, with little or no opportunity to interact. (Feb. 19, 15A, “Star-Telegram 2020 Texas primary election recommendation list”)
Citing fear of incidents in several congressional districts years ago, Granger substituted public sessions with carefully controlled conference calls, and now even these have been eliminated. Sending self-congratulatory e-mails to people is not an adequate substitute for face-to-face interactions.
Although this may not be the only or most important factor in whether to re-elect her, it is fundamental service to constituents.

Do we need Chinese work crews?
It’s amazing that the Chinese government built a hospital for coronavirus victims in 10 days, but the people in charge of Panther Island (including Rep. Kay Granger and her son J.D. Granger) can’t get three little bridges built in 10 years.

Millionaires: Let’s eat the rich
Listening to Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders spread class warfare and promises of free things reminds me of my childhood in Czechoslovakia, when the Communists took power. Equality for everyone sounded so good just after World War II.
We soon found out that some — the Communist leaders — were more equal than others.
Warren and Sanders are millionaires even as they rail against the rich in their pursuit of power.
Demagogues throughout history have gained power by promising free things. My experience tells me to beware of Sanders and Warren.

No politics on the playing field
I second the comments in a Tuesday letter to the editor (9A) criticizing the Star-Telegram’s Mac Engel for inserting political opinions into his sports commentary. Why do editors not clip out extraneous material from a column if it adds nothing, especially if it is a gratuitous and partisan political opinion?
Democrats and Republicans alike are sick of being hit with politics everywhere we turn. I want to enjoy the simple pleasure of reading a paper in the morning, but your refusal to keep political opinions on the Opinion pages is making it impossible.
It’s hard to support a paper that provides a forum for writers to remind everyone constantly how unhappy they are about the 2016 election.

Money doesn’t mean leadership
I hope Mike Bloomberg doesn’t think he can buy his way to being elected president. He is not a good candidate for Texas or for this country.
