Condescension to Southerners is why we turn to social media

This image released by Turner Classic Movies shows Clark Gable, left, and Vivien Leigh in a scene from “Gone with the Wind.” On Thursday, the TCM Classic Film Festival will open its 10th annual edition in Los Angeles with “When Harry Met Sally...” To mark its anniversary, TCM will on Sunday again air “Gone With the Wind,” the film that it first transmitted on April 14, 1994. We Republicans got bad treatment

Monday’s front-page story “Expect long lines at area polls for state’s primary” quotes a local Democratic leader saying that voting machines are segregated by party because some Democratic voters have felt mistreated by Republican voters in the past.

It’s another example of you driving away Republicans with leftist articles. My wife and I were harassed by Democrats in Arlington when we went to vote in 2016, while a browbeaten Republican supporter sat listening to their taunts.

After 30 years as a subscriber, I just can’t see supporting the direction your articles are going.

Granger has not earned a return

It escapes me how anyone can believe that Rep. Kay Granger’s ticket to Washington has not been canceled. She has supported the boondoggle of Panther Island without securing permanent funding, while her son has made money working for the project.

Tarrant County taxpayers are going to be stuck with the bill for Panther Island. It’s time for Kay to come home.

Abortion the same as slavery

I found myself transported back 200 years while reading a Tuesday letter to the editor that said, “If you don’t like abortion, don’t have one.” Just substitute “slavery” and “slaves” to get to the heart of the problem with that cheeky response. (9A)

What abortion rights advocates refuse to acknowledge is that unborn babies are human and deserve to be treated as such.

Thank you, Cynthia M. Allen, for discussing this hypocritical problem within the Democrats’ “pro-family” platform in your column, “Democratic candidates: No room in party for pro-lifers.” (Feb. 14, 13A)

The legalized murder of children is everyone’s problem, just as slavery was so long ago.

Cornyn has been there too long

It will be a while before the United States has congressional term limits, but they’re coming. John Cornyn will have represented Texas in the Senate for 18 years at the end of his current term. That’s equal to or more than what any reasonable constitutional amendment would allow.

As many Texans as possible should vote in the Republican primary and vote for his challenger, Dwayne Stovall. I’d vote for Stovall even if the incumbent were only at the end of his first term.

Perfect the enemy of the good

Democratic voters must realize that to win the presidency, they must select not a candidate who suits them but rather a candidate who suits the majority of voters in Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and other swing states.

OK if the money holds out

Our affluenza-suffering adolescent president is forgiven for his egregious behavior because he came from wealth, where money can cover any illegality. As long as the 401(k)s are looking good and the sugar economy is falsely booming because of deregulation and letting the wealthy run wild, President Donald Trump can tweet with all the other adolescents, and all is forgiven.

The reason we like tweets

Her Sunday column “Stand athwart the exclamation point — and stop right there” (4B) is not the first time Kathleen Parker has shown her opinion of the South.

Two paragraphs describe Southerners as overly excitable and liken them to characters out of “Gone With The Wind.” Her condescending and arrogant attitude is displayed in her lecture on how to write without exclamation points and uppercase letters. And, of course, she had to criticize President Donald Trump and social media.

No wonder more people are relying on social media. They don’t like their heritage or their intelligence insulted in such an arrogant manner.

Astros players cannot skate here

I saw my first major league baseball game in 1947, watching Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. Back then, baseball was sport for both players and fans. Maybe we naively relied on the honesty and integrity of the game.

The latest scandal is beyond anything in the past. The Houston Astros deliberately violated the rules and cheated their way to a championship. Although a few heads rolled, it is a travesty that the players have, so far, escaped punishment for their sign-stealing scheme.

I will not buy a single ticket to an Astros game until justice prevails.
