Senator Cornyn, we Texans are an independent lot. Be careful about impeachment

Come around on impeachment

I used to oppose impeaching President Donald Trump, believing the 2020 election would be a better way to deal with his general corruption — until seeing the products of the investigation of his July 25 phone call to Ukraine’s president.

Based on the hearings and trial so far, the bottom line is that Trump tried to interfere with our 2020 elections to benefit himself. Free and open elections are probably the most basic feature of our democracy.

If he’s allowed to get away with this, we will have lost our democracy.

Term limits would be a solution

Is the timing of the impeachment process political coincidence or prime-time drama? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to push charges through the House near the end of the year, with no court hearings to resolve witness testimony. She held the charges from the Senate for weeks, then passed them on just in time for John Bolton’s book to be revealed during the president’s defense.

I am not a fan of the president, but I want a political process that serves the American people, not a particular political party. This is one reason for term limits.

Cornyn should watch the winds

Not everyone in Texas is a Republican. Of those who are Democrats, most are not leftists. Many Democrats vote for Sen. John Cornyn not because they embrace his agenda. Either they are satisfied with his representation, or they simply find it easiest to vote for the familiar name on the ballot.

But if Cornyn continues to cower to the president’s bully tactics and votes to disallow witnesses in the impeachment trial, those moderate Democrats will surely take the time to vote against him.

We can’t let the liars win out

The saddest and scariest part of this current political mess is that it proves lying, denying and disinformation work. If President Donald Trump is not removed from office, is re-elected and gets another four years, then honor, integrity, empathy, compassion, facts and truth will be a distant memory.

Witnesses and additional documents could at least show low-information and fence-riding voters some reality. The Senate Republicans have the chance to save America’s soul, but power is all that matters to them, it seems.

Our choice: democracy or not

We Americans proudly declare our firm belief in our democracy. What good is that if we have partisan politicians seeking personal and partisan gain instead of faithfully executing their sacred duty to the Constitution to save our institutions?

Sadly, many constituents can’t or won’t see that the emperor has no clothes.

Beware of the long test ahead

The long political year has started. We’ve got primaries, local elections. primary runoffs, local runoffs — and then what I’m sure will be a very heated presidential election.

Those running for office must show why they should be in office and not just bash other candidates. And when this year is over, I hope we can heal from all the campaign stress.

Hill focused too much on race

Cowboys nation breathed a collective sigh of relief at Clarence E. Hill Jr.’s story on new Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy’s virtuous hiring of assistants who are minorities. (Jan. 27, 2B, “McCarthy’s Cowboys staff ethnically diverse, familiar”) As every media type knows, racial quotas among the coaching staff are key to the success or failure of the franchise.

Seriously, does Hill understand that average Cowboy fans don’t give a hoot about the color a coach’s skin? All they want is a winner, regardless of ethnicity. Hill, like a lot of media creatures, has devolved from a sports reporter into an arbiter of racial issues. We want to read about the Cowboys, not be lectured about race.
