Is coverage of Bishop Michael Olson an attack on the church, or just good reporting?

Rosemont would be a great start

I hope the City Council will be unanimous on plans to invest in the Rosemont neighborhood. (Jan. 26, 1A, “City revitalization funds target Rosemont area”) People are eager to revitalize.

Rosemont Park is beautiful and always maintained, with children at play, dogs being walked and health-conscious walkers and joggers a daily sight.

Revitalizing this community would also give great hope to surrounding neighborhoods.

Second Amendment into action?

The Sunday paper reported on four different shootings in the area. As someone who is not a member of a militia, I am so thankful the militia is out keeping us safe. What would our city be like without this protection?

Witnesses a matter of basic fairness

I don’t understand why Republicans are so adamantly against having witnesses at President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. Witnesses make any trial fair for everyone.

We need to know the truth. If Trump did not do anything wrong, how could witnesses hurt him?

What facts? I see nothing convincing

Jim Galloway writes that the Senate impeachment hearings will result in “one of the most famous cases of jury nullification on record” if Republican senators set aside or ignore the facts. (Jan. 26, 4B, “Impeachment trial to become a case of jury nullification”)

But what are the facts? A mysterious whistleblower, innuendo, second- or third-hand overheard conversations, interpretations and second-guessing of what the president said or meant?

Politicians and bureaucrats in the Obama administration created an “insurance policy” to keep Trump from staying in office.

A fake dossier was used to obtain U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court warrants, two of which the FISA Court found “not valid.”

The Mueller report, which presented no evidence of collusion with Russia, was an expensive joke.

So, what facts are there to nullify?

Attacking the Catholic Church

As if your paper weren’t bad enough, you could not control your glee in bashing our bishop, Michael Olson, and the Catholic Church by printing two malicious articles that primarily contained opinions, hearsay and gossip — and you printed them above the fold on the front page. (Jan. 24, 1A, “Priest says he didn’t plan to report affair in diocese;” “Friend of bishop says power changed him”)

If I had a bird, the Star-Telegram would not be worthy of lining the bottom of its cage, with possibly one exception: My husband likes to work the crossword puzzle.

My faith in Bishop Olson is gone

A sincere thank you to reporter Nichole Manna for her coverage of Bishop Michael Olson. I have personally witnessed his irrational behavior and have lost all trust in him.

I felt ill and saddened by the comments Olson’s attorneys made about Dianne Cluley. I have met her more than once. Her comments are not “false” or “salacious,” and she is not senile. I commend her for coming forward.

Don’t cave to strong-arm tactics

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s reaction to questions from NPR’s Mary Louise Kelly is very disappointing but not surprising. (Jan. 26, 1A, “Pompeo lashes out at NPR journalist”)

Pompeo threw a fit because Kelly followed up on his generic answers with a request for specific examples. Pompeo couldn’t provide them. Instead, after the interview, he cussed at Kelly and cried sabotage.

I encourage every reporter to stay strong. We need you now more than ever. We appreciate what you do.
