We are exhausted by Trump’s indecency, but we can’t let it become the new normal
Don’t let yourself get tired and quit
President Donald Trump chips away at our sensibilities, bends the needle of our moral compass and distracts us with more despicable behavior. He repeats this sick cycle over and over.
Three years into Trump’s egocentric, bullying, hateful, racist, abusive and childish rant of a presidential term, we have become exhausted and numb to his tactics. Trump has damaged our democracy and diminished our culture of decency.
Chip away, bend the needle, distract, repeat.
We cannot stand by and allow Trump to destroy what is left of this country.

I served, and I’m sick of war
So we killed an important higher-up in Iran’s military hierarchy. Maybe if the leaders of countries were targeted rather than 18-year-olds on the battlefield, those leaders wouldn’t be so eager to take action.
Our country has been at war for most of its existence, mostly to satisfy political or religious egos. This volunteer Vietnam veteran wouldn’t back any military action unless an enemy were coming down my street.

Own property? Pay attention, then
If you’ve bought a home in North Texas in the last 15 years or are renting, you should focus on government greed that leads to high property taxes. When our homes drop in value, local governments are quick to raise the tax rate.
We’re told the money is important for the schools. But we need to stop the Robin Hood approach and get property taxes under control.

Astros got off way too easy
After cheating to win the 2017 World Series, the Astros were fined $5 million and saw their manager and general manager suspended for a year (and then fired). But what about the millionaire players who were complicit?
Every Astros player involved should be suspended for a year, and the team’s World Series trophy should be forfeited to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
What would happen if an NFL defense knew what plays the offense was to run in advance?
There might be no crying in baseball, but there’s certainly cheating.

Aikman said what we’re all thinking
Thank you, Troy Aikman, for calling out Jerry Jones, even though you had to be nice about it. (Jan. 8, 3B, “Aikman loves hiring of coach McCarthy”)
I’ll tell it like it really is: Jones is the reason the Cowboys haven’t been to the Super Bowl in 25 years. He hires puppet head coaches and thinks he knows best how to hire assistant coaches. And he thinks he knows how to acquire the best players.
Until Jones gets out of the business of being head coach and keeps his mouth shut, the Cowboys will never get back to the Super Bowl.

Let’s look outside our walls
Recently, I realized that the Star-Telegram’s national and world news sections seem to be quite light. It’s important to understand the news and perspectives of other countries. The Australian bush fires and trade in Africa, Vietnam and Japan can be interesting and helpful for Texans to know.
