A plea to Tinslee Lewis’ family: Listen to the doctors

Please listen to the professionals

Does Tinslee Lewis’ family not understand what severe pain this baby is in? (Jan. 7, 1A, “Mother: Transfer baby on life support”)

This seems to be more about the family and the courts than the child’s best interests. I believe the specialists know the right answer.

Soleimani was the wrong target

President Donald Trump’s decision to kill Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani with a drone was simply wrong. Like our own generals, Soleimani was a dedicated warrior following the orders of his political leaders.

We need to ask ourselves if the Iranian general was any worse than our generals who followed orders that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths in the Iraq War.

I submit that Trump made this decision simply to change the narrative as the U.S. Senate gears up for his impeachment trial.

Credit where credit is due

The economy has been strong during the Trump administration. Aside from the issue of budget deficits, most indicators are going great.

The Jan. 3 story, “America’s decade of jobs, prosperity and opportunity” (9A), highlights that the economic growth since the end of the Great Recession in 2009 has brought record levels of low unemployment and high stock prices. That’s 10 years, not just the last three.

President Donald Trump jumped on the train a mile from the station and rode into town claiming he built the track.

Uniforms in church help us feel secure

I liked the Jan. 5 story, “Police chief asks officers to wear uniforms to church.” (8A) I applaud Jack Wilson, the church security chief who took down a live shooter within six seconds in the Dec. 29 West Freeway Church of Christ shooting.

I have a license to carry a gun, but I don’t do so in churches. If too many civilians wielding guns did so, it would be easy for one person to accidentally shoot another good Samaritan. Uniforms serve as deterrent and help us instantly identify the “good guys.”

Democrats want to call all the shots

Democrats are trying to control President Donald Trump’s impeachment and trial, even though they control only the House. They’re delaying sending articles of impeachment to the Senate and trying to dictate the conduct of the trial there, although the Constitution gives the Senate power over the trial.

Further, since the Constitution guarantees the right to a speedy trial, shouldn’t this include the president?

Senate Republicans want to conduct the trial under the same rules as President Bill Clinton’s impeachment. Predictably, this isn’t good enough for the Democrats.

This is not the old American way

Have you ever wondered how a democracy evolves into a totalitarian state? It’s happening today on our watch. Whenever a president dictates to Congress and the American people what witnesses we can talk to and which documents we can view, he or she is setting up himself or herself as a dictator, above the law provided by the Constitution.

I predict that within five years, our government will resemble that of Turkey, or perhaps even Russia, more than it does our democracy of today.
