Guns in White Settlement church: A good or a bad thing?
Let’s talk about morals, then
I must respond to the idea in a Dec. 31 letter to the editor that President Donald Trump’s positions on issues such as abortion and religious liberties make him a better moral choice than a Democrat. (9A) The criteria are not about who is less moral.
Historically, Americans have had a high standard for the presidency. Christianity Today has taken the moral high road and opined that some evangelical groups have sold their souls for political power. They have made a bargain with the devil to get judicial appointments of which they approve.
It has been a sordid trade-off for a president who is corrupt, cruel and immoral.
Do any of us want our children to model themselves after this man?

Better than where they came from
I take offense to a letter of Jan. 2 that is critical of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. I have voted both Republican and Democratic in past. I voted for Trump and will again because I believe he is a patriot and a Christian.
Unfortunately, we cannot afford to take in everyone who wants to come into our country.
We care for those detained at the border much better than if they were in their own countries.

More sides to the gun policy debate
After our latest church shooting, we’ve heard discussions about policy. And the policy we’ve heard about is about the right to carry concealed weapons into houses of worship, in order to protect our churches.
The policies missing are about the right for all to bear arms and the right to bear AK-47-like weapons, made for soldiers to kill.
In White Settlement, a well-trained civilian was able to kill an intruder who shot and killed two men in six seconds. If the intruder had been using an semi-automatic rifle, what would have happened? How many more would have died? Would this hero who stopped him be alive?
When we talk policy, we need to discuss all aspects.

Good guy with gun pushed into action
The author of a Jan. 4 letter is critical of the Texas law allowing people with licenses to carry guns to do so in a church. I assume he would prefer that the shooter in White Settlement would have had free rein to kill everyone in the church rather than have someone willing to protect the congregation.
“Good guys” don’t get to plan when and where there will be a mass shooting.

Whose side are the Democrats on?
Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are furious that our military had the nerve to eliminate a top Islamic terrorist, Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani. They condemn President Donald Trump for his actions but refuse to condemn the terrorist for his.
Even former President Barack Obama said that Soleimani was a terrorist responsible for the deaths of more than 500 Americans. Virtually every Democrat and liberal news outlet seems to be rooting for the enemy.

Hijabs not appropriate for work
On the Chicken Express worker wearing a hijab, have we lost all common sense? (Jan. 4, 4A, “Chicken Express worker sent home because of Muslim headscarf”) Do we want women’s apparel dragging or falling into the salad or soup?
Please do not hire employees who refuse clean standards of dress. I will not eat there.
