Readers debate the pros and cons of impeaching Donald Trump

Turnabout isn’t fair play this time

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is now calling for fairness in the Senate impeachment trial. Why did he not raise that concern in the House hearings?

He and Rep. Jerrold Nadler lectured how wrong impeachment was during the Clinton proceedings. Now, the political parties are reversed, and so are their beliefs.

Future not looking good for TCU

My worst nightmare is coming true: TCU’s back-to-back bad football seasons are having a negative effect on recruiting.

Rules must apply evenly to all

President Donald Trump abused his power, violated his oath of office and betrayed our nation. This is a solemn moment for our country. But in the United States, no one is above the law — not even the president.

Forgiveness and disappointment

Dear Mr. President,

I forgive you for your narrow-mindedness, putting your political aspirations before your oath of office and the country you are supposed to be serving.

To the Republicans in Congress, you are bringing shame upon yourselves by enabling this president. You all have put power and political party before country.

- May Beauchamp Massie, White Settlement

Process will matter in the future

There will be others who serve as president, and if we permit them to have unlimited or unchecked power, abuses may occur. Elected officials are held to a higher standard to prevent such abuses.

The importance of decisions and the processes, practices and actions behind them is clear. The Senate sits as a high court of impeachment. It must conduct a fair trial in which the senators consider evidence, hear witnesses and vote to acquit or convict.

- L.J. Smith, Grapevine

Do the right thing, senators

We the American people are faced with an important decision. I strongly encourage Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz to convict President Donald Trump.

Do what’s right. We deserve an honest, experienced president, not one who is only interested in power and disgracing our country.

Don’t be part of a flock of sheep that go over a cliff.

- Barbara D. Price, Fort Worth

Take impeachment seriously

What a laugh impeachment would be if it weren’t so serious.

Supporters of President Donald Trump say the House is trying to remove him from office because Democrats can’t beat him in an election. Senators could say that what he did was not serious, slap him on the wrist and say, “Bad boy, don’t do that again,” with a wink.

Senate Republicans think they can be re-elected on Trump’s coattails. I hope they all lose and end Trumpism for good.

- Bunn Butler, Granbury

I’ve heard this kind of thing before

The author of a Sunday letter to the editor states he has never heard any president or government official insulting and criticizing a segment of America like President Donald Trump does. I wonder where he was when Hillary Clinton called the millions of us who voted for Trump “deplorables.”
