If you come after dollar stores, the customers will suffer

The rest of the trans story

The Dec. 7 front-page story “Transgender inmates sue Texas over ‘cruel’ name change law” was very unbalanced. You did not interview any law enforcement officials to learn why name changes, sometimes known as aliases, can confuse subsequent arrests and tracking. Please stop the one-sided liberal reporting.

Kind of news I want to read

I have been reading the Star-Telegram for more than 50 years. Last Sunday’s Local & Texas section wins a trophy. Included were stories about a Fort Worth native Navy officer, long-gone movie theaters, Interlochen’s Christmas lights tour and Fort Worth’s police chief.

It was a collection of outstanding articles. Thanks to the Star-Telegram staff and contributors.

Too hard to get into Dickies

We attended the college basketball game Sunday to see the new Dickies Arena everyone is raving about. It took three cycles to clear the traffic light at University Drive and Interstate 30, and traffic dangerously backed up on the highway. People die in accidents where cars are stopped next to traffic going 70 mph.

The arena was only half full. Fort Worth is clearly not ready to handle major events in this arena. If I ever return, I’ll see if traveling by Trinity Metro is any better.

Give Fort Worth the Schwab love

In May, when Charles Schwab became sponsor of the PGA tournament at Colonial Country Club, Schwab’s founder and chairman said, “We are thinking this Texas and Fort Worth area is really home for us.”

Now I see that with Schwab’s Ameritrade acquisition, Westlake will be home to the company’s merged headquarters. (Dec. 4, 1A, “Charles Schwab’s TD Ameritrade acquisition creates Westlake hub”)

As a loyal Schwab client, it is a pet peeve of mine that associates there are told to refer to the office as being in Dallas. Schwab, please show your loyalty and either call it the Fort Worth office or Westlake office.

Take bull’s eye off dollar stores

Here comes the arbitrary crusade against dollar stores. (Dec. 5, 1A, “Fort Worth passes regulations to limit dollar stores”) This latest measure to force them to stock fresh meat, dairy products and vegetables will be prohibitively expensive. It will require extra refrigeration and be unprofitable for the stores.

What happened to free enterprise? This mandate will be the end of future stores. Dollar stores are ubiquitous but necessary to the areas they serve.

Why doesn’t the City Council go after drug stores monopolizing every major intersection, or payday lenders and convenience stores?

Police monitor deserves a chance

I was disheartened by the writers of Tuesday’s guest commentary, “Fort Worth police monitor won’t have enough resources, power,” (11A) who clearly don’t appear to want the city or its newly hired police monitor to succeed.

To label the entire process a failure before it’s even tested appears profoundly shortsighted. Until the process has begun, residents should be realistic about what it requires. Patience, cooperation and understanding will go a long way.

Let the police monitor do his or her job, then focus on what’s successful and what needs to be adjusted. This effort at oversight and transparency will evolve. It won’t happen overnight.
