Politics shouldn’t feel like a bunch of ‘Star Wars’ space aliens

Rangers owners really owe us

The Rangers’ ownership should be embarrassed for gouging the fans while refusing to put a watchable baseball team on the field. There’s still time to buy top-quality free-agent pitching.

At least give us a sign you care.

Lessons children need to learn

Kudos to Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter Diane Smith for the front page story March 18 on the Fort Worth Independent School District holiday honoring Dolores Huerta and César Chávez. (“Fort Worth students urged to use holiday to follow in Huerta’s steps”)

All students need to know about the lessons of joining forces with others and marching with courage and non-violence for social progress. This is what Huerta and Chávez did in their struggle for decent wages and improved working and living conditions.

According to the office of Sherry Breed, chief of equity and excellence with the district, Huerta spoke to students the morning of the school holiday. What a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn firsthand about community service and leadership.

Thanks to the district for its progressive thinking and actions.

No communists in Fort Worth, please

In the April 3 Star-Telegram, New York Times writer Timothy Egan blathered an unsupported and opinionated piece on carbon emissions and the opening of U.S. lands to drilling. (13A, “Your public lands are killing you”)

To an informed person, the column was blatantly biased, with few facts interspersed with a lack of knowledge. These type pieces are acceptable for liberal, non-thinking papers in the Northeast but should not be reprinted in the strong-economy Southwest. The support of communists and socialists by a Fort Worth paper is truly unacceptable.

Newspaper staffs have been reduced, but surely the Star-Telegram has a few writers who can discuss items of interest to our region without adopting the ridiculous non-supported rantings of Northeast socialists.

Texas supports a strong economy, which includes oil and gas.

And no future special editions

Is it just me or does our political landscape resemble the bizarre bar scene in the original “Star Wars” where carnival-like critters from all over the universe gathered and babbled away with zany circus-like background music?

And I’m not just talking about would-be candidates but lots of characters, some already in government, the media and pontificators in general.

“Other worldly” seems an appropriate description, too. So I say let’s resurrect that kooky “Star Wars” bar scene and let it be the perfect showcase for wannabe pols who have and will continue to come out of the woodwork.

Give Old White Men a break

Kudos to Kathleen Parker for her April 2 column, “The war on Old White Men.” (9A) I could not agree more with her.

It seems for years we have been hearing how white men have done such terrible things, but we forget the sacrifices that class made in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf wars. Any supposed transgressions need to be put in the context of the periods’ culture.

I’m sure our culture will continue to change, but let us not demean OWM for the culture they were dealt. Weren’t our current equality and diversity laws passed by these same Old White Men?
