Second chances; response to abuse
Second chances
Regarding Mac Engel’s column and Dale Hansen’s commentary:
A white Josh Hamilton is welcomed with open arms. He had a good upbringing in a fantastic family environment and still twisted off.
When young black NFL players are involved in drug- or alcohol-fueled violence or accidents, Dale and Mac want to financially and professionally string them up.
No second chances for them. “Head back to the hood where you belong, loser!”
What did these black guys have in the way of an upbringing? Did they watch their daddies hit their mammas? Lots of alcohol in the house? A violent neighborhood?
Did their universities teach them how to act, or just turn their backs to bad actions and bad habits? Anyone around to teach them about the perils associated with coming into lots of money?
Look at the second chances the Cowboys have afforded to all the “bad characters.” How have those guys responded thus far?
With a little love, guidance and counseling, it appears that lives can, indeed, be turned around.
Tell your kid that it is important to be taught right from wrong at an early age, that some aren’t and that second chances are important for everyone.

Responding to abuse
As I read the article “New lawsuit alleges sexual abuse in Fort Worth Catholic diocese,” on Friday, March 6, I was impressed by the way Bishop Michael Olson responded to the allegations.
Validating feelings of betrayal is an important step in the healing process.
Avoiding legal action is preferred for obvious reasons.
Sexual abuse can lead to repression of painful memories, especially in children.
We need effective ways to discover sexual abuse and stop it quickly to prevent further trauma.
