Trump & Russia

So according to the CIA, Russia tried to influence our election by assisting Wikileaks in shining the glaring light of truth on the Democrats and their campaign.

What a novel concept!

Someone in this country should have been doing that.

Oh, wait — that's actually one of the functions of the free press.

Guess the mainstream media was too busy protecting us from the truth.

John Finneran, Granbury

If The Washington Post report is true, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell knew in advance that an enemy nation-state was tampering with the election in favor of his party’s candidate, and stonewalled so that you and I would not know.

This is an excellent definition of treason.

We need an independent commission immediately, with full power to prosecute criminal actions. This cannot stand.

And for those letters saying the Electoral College’s job is to vote the “will of the people”?

The will of the people was to elect Hillary Clinton by 2.8 million votes.

The Electoral College’s original and specific function is to deny the presidency to someone exactly like Donald Trump.

Stephen L. Kelly, Arlington

Recent letters supporting electing our president by popular vote versus the Electoral College reflect a lack of understanding of our constitutional underpinnings.

Our founders wanted to preserve states’ authority and therefore created a constitutional republic, not a pure democracy.

To limit federal power, the 10th Amendment was added.

In addition, each state has two senators regardless of population. Some stats have two senators and only one member of the House.

To ensure large population states did not control elections, the Electoral College was created. Without the Electoral College, small, thinly populated states would be left out.

We are a large and mobile nation. Populations shift for economic, climate or societal reasons. Our system provides representation regardless of population shifts.

We are best served when this concept is understood and not altered for current political purposes.

Trashy town

Several weeks ago someone wrote about a mother in a Lexus SUV at a McDonald’s who changed her baby’s diapers, then left the dirty diaper on the ground and drove off.

This seems to be the norm: pounds of trash and litter along our freeways and access roads.

I’ve spent at least seven hours in the last two weeks personally (using a “grabber”) picking up litter/trash on the west side, and I’m 74.

How about some people required to do community service give a hand?

No one seems to do anything about this mess. I’m ashamed of our filthy city.

Monica (“Posy”) McMillen, Fort Worth

Zoo guns

Thank goodness for common sense not to allow guns at the zoo.

We go to the zoo for families to enjoy a peaceful day with nature, not to be a victim of an accidental shooting.

Please enforce the no-gun law to keep everyone safe.

Fort Worth
