No ‘mama bear’; war is hell; presidential omission; a look at the Lege

No ‘mama bear’

The woman being called “Mama Bear” is no hero.

First, the accident had already happened, so what was she defending her child from?

Second, the man she and her boyfriend attacked had a gun in his car.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see how badly this could have turned out.

Finally, at the time of the wreck, she knew nothing about the police chase.

Suppose what had happened was that he had a heart attack or seizure and caused the wreck, and they then dragged him out of the car and slammed him to the ground?

What would you be calling her then?

— Scott Coleman, Fort Worth

War is hell

Regarding the recent opinion piece, “Stop drone strikes and the moral injury of their pilots.”

Herman Keizer says, “ . . . to our military values, and to our own society, we should halt our use of lethal drones and engage in serious research and dialogue on their use.”

What? I understand the mincing rhetoric, but sorry, “War is hell” no matter how its fought, even from some remote distance.

Dialogue has never won a war or saved those fighting it. At its core, there’s not much sociological about it. It’s either kill and break things or let your enemy do it to you first.

Stretching out this war against the terror of radical Islam to “research” the use of an already effective weapon, “lethal drones,” is tantamount to saying go back and risk foot soldiers and on-scene pilots instead.

— Richard M. Holbrook, Weatherford

A look at the Lege

Lawmakers in Texas will receive a $5,600 increase for the 140-day regular session to cover daily expenses.

They will end up receiving a total of $26,600 during the session, not including salary. Pretty generous in this economy.

Also the Senate State Affairs Committee voted to advance open-carry and campus-carry bills.

Why is there a panic button installed in every lawmaker’s office?

Are they afraid those open-carry and campus-carry laws will open a Pandora’s Box when passed?

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral comes to mind.

Texas lawmakers are as close as we have in Texas to royalty.

Jan M. Verrijcke, Arlington

Presidential omission

I was sorry to see that two of our greatest presidents, Washington and Lincoln, were not mentioned in the recent article about Presidents Day.

Washington spent his entire life in the service of our country.

Lincoln gave his life for it and Franklin Roosevelt saw us though the greatest war in history.

Our presidents were honored only by a day of buying and selling.

Why so?

Why didn’t we give them a legal holiday, a parade and speeches like others of lesser stature have?

What has happened to patriotism and love of country?

— Gerald A. Bayer, Fort Worth
