Ballpark money, paying taxes, museum rebirth

Ballpark money

Arlington voters need to think about their vote on the stadium proposed by the Texas Rangers.

Look at Jerry World and how much you have to pay just to get in the parking lot. Do you really think that it will be cheaper at the Rangers ballpark?

The owners just want more of your money to watch a baseball game.

Everything in pro sports is about money, and that’s it. It’s not about the game.

They want your money, and they want to not spend their own for their new ballpark.

Think before you vote.

Globe Life Park is a great place to watch a game.

If the owners want a new stadium, they should build it.

Paying taxes

Scientists stepping into hazmat suits to study the nastiest viruses on earth. Soldiers offering up their lives, far away from their own families, to protect mine.

Meteorologists and astronomers keeping vigilant watch over our precious planet. Librarians stocking shelves full books for my family to enjoy.

Air traffic controllers sitting at computer screens all day long so that my plane lands safely. Teachers giving everything they’ve got to educate my children.

Workers laboring in the hot sun or bitter cold to maintain the infrastructure my family uses every day. Curators protecting the precious artifacts of my civilization.

Doctors healing the bodies and minds of our wounded veterans.

These are just a few of the reasons why I am a proud middle-class taxpayer.

Shame on anyone of means, especially a billionaire like Donald Trump, who would brag about not paying taxes.

Donald Trump says it is “smart” to pay less in federal income taxes than school teachers and bus drivers.

He shows no remorse that the bankruptcies that enabled him to continue his lavish lifestyle meant that contractors went without pay and stockholders in his corporations lost more than 90 percent on their investments.

Is it wise to vote for a presidential candidate who does not want to financially support the government that he wants to lead? Who will pay for the increases in military spending and infrastructure that he vows to create?

Middle class voters should look at his success in managing his businesses before trusting him to manage the largest budget in the world.

Museum rebirth

When the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History holds its 75th Anniversary Gala on Thursday and “many of city’s most influential citizens” walk through its corporately sponsored doors, one can safely guess that none of those invitees will be teachers — an ironic twist given that those were the people who made the museum possible. (“After years of struggling, museum plans big changes,” Sunday)

It just might be that our profession’s lack of input on its current incarnation could partially explain why the institution has found itself so tragically far afield from its original vision and why attendance is so low.

What museum President Van Romans and company fail to grasp is the collective grief felt by ordinary people for whom exhibits such as “Trepan Man” and the Hall of Medicine were beloved touchstones.

Dismissing such displays as “stagnant” was one way to permanently dispatch them while essentially stripping away a rich and vertically aligned learning opportunity for kids.

This is not a technology museum, despite current efforts to turn it into one, and any classroom teacher will tell you that there are other ways to learn besides pressing a button or spending hours in front of a screen.
