Tarrant County College District trustees have named the person they expect to be their next chancellor, but it’s hard to escape the feeling they wanted someone else.
“Our final two choices are not perfect,” board President Louise Appleman told Star-Telegram reporter Mark David Smith. “We had difficulty finding the perfect candidate. There is no such person.”
The chancellor-designate is Eugene Giovannini, founding president of Maricopa Corporate College in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was appointed by trustees on Thursday, but under state law the hire can’t be final until after a 21-day wait.
“Together, we’re going on a trust walk,” Appleman said. “We’re going to give it our best shot to make a new regime work for our students and our community.”

After emerging from a 30-candidate field, Giovannini should be an excellent leader for TCC. If trustees are not fully confident that he is, they should feel no compunction about starting the search over again.
There is no deadline. TCC deserves the best.
