Golf tournament raises millions for charities

Star-Telegram

In the stultifying humidity, golf greats battle it out for the top title of the 2016 Dean & DeLuca Invitational, formerly known colloquially as the Colonial, but Tarrant County will be the real winner.

Each year, the historic golf tournament raises millions of dollars for a multitude of charities. In 2015, more than $9 million went to local charities. The PGA Tour says more than $80 million went to about 150 charities in the last 20 years.

Fort Worth’s tournament is one of the top five charity earners on the tour.

And they make giving to local charities a bit of sport in its own. The PGA tour continues its Birdies for Charity program in which “Charitable Organizations solicit pledges … for every birdie” during this week’s tournament.

The program also matches a certain percentage of the funds, depending on the money raised.

Donations from the program will help local organizations from Safehaven of Tarrant County to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

A great bonus to an already enjoyable week of golfing and food.
