#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou but still causes trauma

“Lack of physical violence does not mean the abuser is any less dangerous to the victim, nor does it mean the victim is any less trapped by the abuse,” says the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s website.

Twitter users are baring their trauma to help teach about domestic abuse with the hashtag #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou.

The hashtag went viral this week as users get to the heart of the domestic abuse problem — not all abuse involves physical violence.

Emotional and psychological abuse are equally devastating, and because of the lack of evidence, a lot of victims suffer in silence or don’t understand they might be in an abusive relationship.

“Emotional and psychological abuse can often be just as extreme as physical violence,” says the website of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The hashtag has become a beacon of light for some and an educational tool for others. The pain, frustration, anger have been encapsulated in 140 characters so others can understand and fight.

One Twitter user wrote: #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou but he makes sure you believe that you’re too broken/damaged to ever be wanted by anyone else.

Nobody should suffer domestic abuse alone, and Twitter users are helping to make sure of that.
