The Smithsonian displays a bit of Fort Worth culture in its National Portrait Gallery.

Sedrick Huckaby, a Fort Worth native, earned a commendation in the 2016 national Outwin Boochever Portrait competition. He was one of the seven artists recognized nationwide.

Huckaby’s self-portrait, Sedrick, Sed, Daddy, will be on display in the exhibition “The Outwin 2016: American Portraiture Today” with the other 50 finalists until January.

While his portrait is on display, he could also win the “People’s Choice” award. Art lovers can vote on site or online for the piece they think best strives to “investigate the art of contemporary portraiture,” as the competition’s website says.

Huckaby’s works have been displayed at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and have permanent homes at The Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.

When he is not at work on his superb art pieces, he is an assistant professor of art at the University of Texas at Arlington.
