The artwork unveiled and dedicated Sunday at Veterans Park in Arlington is not just a statue.

It’s a memorial, meant to bring forth and honor the memory of people who fought and, in many cases, died in the now long-ago and far-away Vietnam War.

More to the point, this memorial honors the U.S. and South Vietnamese soldiers who fought side-by-side in that war, an effort to stop the takeover of South Vietnam by North Vietnam.

That effort ultimately failed, but the soldiers and their teamwork must indeed be remembered and honored.

The Heroes of South Vietnam Memorial Foundation raised $500,000 for the project, including $150,000 from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation.
