Progress in the Stockyards

Fort Worth’s Historic Stockyards Design District Task Force has made some significant headway.

The task force began meeting in May to draw up standards for redevelopment in the Stockyards, things like building design and materials, architectural style, parking and walkway design, signage, landscaping and lighting.

At times, the 16-member group has been split into factions.

But at a meeting on Wednesday the group decided one of its most contentious issues: Building heights in the core of the historic area and farther south of Exchange Avenue down to Marine Creek will be limited to three stories.

California-based Majestic Realty plans a $175 million Stockyards development project and has discussed building a hotel of “at least four or five stories” within those boundaries.

The task force plans to send its recommendations to the City Council next month. The council will face some tough decisions on the standards.
