Schieffer always a class act
With the same class, confidence and humility that have defined his 58 years in journalism, CBS newsman and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer came home to Fort Worth on Wednesday to make an announcement that would stun his audience at Texas Christian University and his colleagues all over the country.
The occasion was the 11th annual Schieffer Symposium on the News, which brings noted journalists to TCU for discussions before an audience of students, alumni and residents.
Noting that he got his first paid job in journalism at a local radio station while still a TCU student, Schieffer said, “And because that is where it all started for me, I wanted this to be the place, and wanted you to be the first to know: This summer I’m going to retire.”
In addition to applause for his distinguished career, Ed Landreth Auditorium also saw tears.
From chasing car wrecks at KXOL radio to working as a police reporter and Vietnam correspondent for the Star-Telegram to varied assignments at CBS, Schieffer has earned awards and respect.
Take a bow, Bob, for such an enduring and endearing classy act.
