A trade mission trip to Canada? Yes, please.

Two city officials believe that you can be American by thinking globally.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings are promoting North Texas business and free trade opportunities while on a trade mission trip in Canada.

It’s on the heels of the successful trade mission trip to Mexico last year.

These bipartisan, pro-trade endeavors are a welcome sight, especially in the chaos of President Donald Trump’s lukewarm to freezing-cold responses to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and in the wake of the frustrating new “Buy America” state law Gov. Greg Abbott signed recently.

At least Price and Rawlings understand that free trade is a crucial part of the booming DFW economy.

Toronto and Montreal are two of the biggest trade partners with DFW, making almost $3 billion annually.

The DFW area is equally distant from Toronto and Mexico, making North Texas a great halfway point for NAFTA. It also has one of the biggest airport hubs in the United States.

This area has been prime real estate for healthy trade. Both Price and Rawlings see that and are ready to fight for its future.

“It is important to do no harm, keep the trade pact trilateral, maintain Texas’ global competitiveness and move quickly to prevent marketplace uncertainty,” the mayors wrote in an opinion piece.

We couldn’t agree more.
