Cheers: To President Obama for ending the 50-plus years of ineffective sanctions against Cuba. The move will benefit both countries — trade and tourism will increase. It will certainly be better to have a friendlier country that close to the U.S., instead of the 50-year-old hostile Cuba.

— Jim Sanderson, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Barack Obama for opening up relations with Cuba. Its been too long for this close neighbor to be an outcast. Jeers to the naysayers. This is good for both economies.

— Dan Blake, Benbrook

Cheers: To students from Summit International Prep, Seguin, Lamar, First Baptist Youth Ministry and the UTA Big Event who helped clean, weed and mulch the O.S. Gray Natural Area on West Abram Street. And to Sara Stearns, who earned her Girl Scout Gold Award for her sign, bench and footpath.

— Paula Harbour, Arlington

Cheers: To Sears at Hulen Mall for partnering with the Fort Worth Kiwanis Club to provide warm winter clothing for 40 underprivileged children. Sears employees Kevin, Kimberly, Vickie and Brenda helped the Kiwanis members in every way, selecting each child’s clothing and providing substantial discounts, gift bags and bows.

Cheers: To Angel at Service King at South Hulen Street and Kingswood Drive for kind and competent service while instantly fixing my damaged car with a well-placed screwdriver and strong hand!

Cheers: To Rogelio Hernandez concrete company. When we needed driveway repairs his crew responded quickly and expertly and did the job in one day in an outstanding fashion. And at a very fair price.

— Dan L. Smith, Fort Worth

Jeers: To Brite Divinity School for the “die-in” and President Williams saying, “As persons of faith who believe that God values all persons … ” Where are these persons of faith demonstrating when police officers are killed in the line of duty? Does God not value officers and their families regardless of color?

— Karla Whitmire, Itasca

Jeers: To the Arlington police officer who pulled over a dad and daughter and gave a ticket to the daughter even though she was wearing a seatbelt. Now she is afraid to ride in the car and is afraid of police officers.

— Jodeen Lee, Arlington

— Dawn Thomasson, Fort Worth

Cheers: To Dr. Dozier and the staff at Southside Veterinary Clinic for their thoughtfulness and compassion when I had to have my pug, Bella, euthanized. They showed great compassion and tenderness both to Bella and me, for which I am so grateful. They made a difficult time easier to endure.

— Judy Kingman, Fort Worth

Jeers: To a well-known bakery brand famous for quality and freshness. I purchased cinnamon rolls and bread and opened both upon return home. The rolls had mold and the bread was stale. To complain you now have to call Pennsylvania.

— James Colton, Mineral Wells

Cheers: To someone who bought my daughter Lisa’s lunch and mine a few weeks ago at Paris Coffee Shop. Thanks for your “giving spirit,” and it already has been passed forward. Merry Christmas to all. Truly a time of giving.

— Garry Fellers, Fort Worth

Cheers: To my across-the-street neighbor, Mr. Mike, who has raised his children, mine and all on our street over the years. He has kind words, patience and a never-ending supply of tools and know-how for every situation. His family is the definition of good neighbors and we are blessed to know them.

Cheers: To Dr. Niak, VA Dental-Dallas, for giving my husband, Bob, back his smile. Cancer may have taken it away, but with his final obturator you gave it back to him. It took two years to complete but we it was worth the wait. Thank you can’t express how grateful we are for what all you did.

Jeers: To the condos on Eagle Mountain Lake that paid someone to cut down weeds and undergrowth along the shoreline and then left the debris to blow into the lake or onto their neighbors’ property. It’s a shameful mess.

— Keith Charles, Fort Worth

Cheers: To the responsible pet owners who not only spay/neuter their pets but they also take the time to go look for them when they end up missing and living on the street. I sure hope Smokie finds himself a more responsible place to call “home.”

— Judith A. Williams,

Westover Village

Cheers: To Lester, who helped us out when our car became disabled in front of Sprouts off South Hulen Street. We needed a No. 2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the front engine shroud around our front tire. Lester drove over to The Home Depot and purchased one, without charging us.

— John and Kathie Hall,

Fort Worth

Cheers: To Chris, one of the owners of the family-owned Valero gas station at Interstate 20 and Kelly-Elliott Road. A customer reported that a “mommy” was stranded. He walked in the pouring rain to my car, helped move it, and spent an hour getting me on the road again.
