North Texas forecast for rain, storms Monday; fire weather watch for western region Sunday

Parts of North Texas are expected to see critical fire weather conditions Sunday before widespread rain showers and storms hit the region Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

Saturday was expected to see warm and dry weather that elevates the threat of dangerous grass fires, specifically for counties west of U.S. Highway 281 just outside of Tarrant County. Residents should avoid activities that may lead to extreme heat or sparks.

A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Sunday for counties west of U.S. 281, which will continue to see dry and windy weather. Any ongoing fires could spread rapidly, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday is expected to have widespread showers and thunderstorms starting in the morning and persisting into Tuesday morning with the possibility of minor flooding.

Severe thunderstorms could pop up south of I-20 and east of I-35 on Monday afternoon.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible over parts of Central and East Texas with chances of tornadoes, damaging wind gusts and large hail, the weather service said.

Tarrant County is expected to see an inch to an inch and a half of rain.
