The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of North Texas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, effective Friday afternoon, according to the alert.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 19 degrees on Friday night, Jan. 23, and remain below freezing until Monday, Jan. 26, according to the NWS forecast.

The alert issued Tuesday warns of “moderate to heavy” accumulations of winter precipitation that include snow, sleet, freezing rain and/or ice across the region Friday afternoon through Saturday night.

The weather service said it isn’t predicting exact accumulation amounts yet because several factors were still in flux, including the arrival of the Arctic blast.

“The most likely scenario continues to be a rain and wintry mix precipitation event through Friday night and full transition to a mix of sleet, snow, and freezing rain for our area Saturday before precipitation ends Saturday night or early Sunday,” the weather service posted Tuesday afternoon.

“Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become dangerous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause power outages. Extreme cold will become life-threatening and likely damage unprotected pipes and put livestock at risk,” the alert reads.

The weather service advises keeping an eye on the “four Ps:” people, pets, plants and pipes.

Counties included in this watch are Tarrant, Dallas, Montague, Cooke, Grayson, Fannin, Lamar, Young, Jack, Wise, Denton, Collin, Hunt, Delta, Hopkin, Stephens, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall, Kaufman, Van Zandt, Rains, Eastland, Erath, Hood, Somervell, Johnson, Ellis, Henderson, Comanche, Mills, Hamilton, Bosque, Hill, Navarro, Freestone, Anderson, Lampasas, Coryell, Bell, McLennan, Falls, Limestone, Leon, Milam and Robertson.
