Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, large hail threats on the way in North Texas

After a warm and dry week, severe storms are in the forecast for North Texas over the weekend.

Storm chances (30%) will increase in the afternoon and evening hours (4-10 p.m.) on Friday, May 16, according to the National Weather Service Fort Worth. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are in the mix with this activity.

Better chances for severe storms come on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, in parts of the Metroplex.

Storms are expected to develop late Saturday afternoon and become severe as they move east of Dallas-Fort Worth into areas around Canton and Greenville, according to the NWS.

Scattered severe storm chances return Sunday, but the main threat will be northwest of the Metroplex.

The main threats with severe storms this weekend are damaging winds and large hail. While the tornado threat is low, it could increase in the late evening hours of each day, according to the NWS.

Storm chances continue next week

Storm chances will stick around heading into next week.

As of Thursday, there’s a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms for the region on Monday, May 19. Heading into Tuesday, May 20, similar stormy conditions are in the mix.

The sun will start to poke out on Wednesday, May 21, as temperatures settle in the upper 80s.
