Snow in Fort Worth next week? NWS says it’s possible. Here’s when the arctic front arrives
Snow could be coming to North Texas early next week.
In the National Weather Service Fort Worth forecaster’s discussion Feb. 13, meteorologist Sam Shamburger wrote that current weather models suggest a low chance for light freezing rain or snow late Tuesday, Feb. 18.
“Some guidance including the NBM/GFS suggests a low chance for light freezing rain or light snow on Tuesday night or Wednesday behind the arctic front, but given this is after the current forecast period, forecast confidence is very low,” Shamburger wrote on Thursday, Feb. 13.
Ahead of the potential winter weather next week, temperatures are expected to drop drastically behind a cold front late Saturday, Feb. 15.
Overnight lows will be in the mid-20s in North Texas and in the low 20s along the Red River, Shamburger wrote. Gusty northern winds will make it feel even colder, as wind chills will likely be in the single digits and 10s.
Temperatures will warm to the low 40s in the Metroplex on Sunday, Feb. 16, and drop back into the 20s overnight.
A warm up is in the Monday, Feb. 17, forecast with daily highs in the mid-50s, Shamburger wrote. Tuesday, Feb. 18, is also expected to be a warm day with daily highs in the low 60s.
An arctic front will make its way into the region late Tuesday, followed by an upper disturbance bringing potential for wintry mix overnight and into Wednesday, Feb. 19.
While still multiple days away, there are still several uncertainties in regards to the timing of precipitation and amount of moisture available for this event.
“It will take a few more days to get a handle on the specifics, so we will just keep a brief wintry mix in the forecast Tuesday night/Wednesday morning with no accumulations mentioned,” Shamburger wrote.
