UPDATE: North Texas under a heat advisory until Saturday night, according to the NWS

On Saturday at 1:52 p.m. an updated heat advisory was issued by the NWS Fort Worth TX. The advisory is for Montague, Cooke, Grayson, Fannin, Young, Jack, Wise, Denton, Collin, Stephens, Palo Pinto, Parker, Tarrant, Dallas, Hood, Somervell and Johnson counties.

Heat index values between 105 and 108 degrees for most of North Texas until 9 p.m. this evening.

“Hot temperatures and high humidity will increase the risk for heat-related illnesses to occur, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” adds the NWS.

This advisory is in effect until 9 p.m.

Tips from the NWS for staying safe during a heat wave

• Stay hydrated: Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

• Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.

• Check on others: Stay out of the sun, and make sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.

• Child and pet safety: Do not leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

• Take extra precautions outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, be sure to take additional safety measures.

• Time your activities wisely: When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

• Familiarize yourself with warning signs: Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

• Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.

To minimize risks during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises incorporating frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone experiences heat-related symptoms, promptly relocate them to a cool and shaded spot. In case of an emergency, dial 911.
