Be prepared for heat index values up to 112 degrees until Friday night

The NWS Fort Worth TX issued an excessive heat warning at 9:22 p.m. on Thursday valid from 10 p.m. until Friday 9 p.m. The warning is for Montague, Jack, Palo Pinto, Erath, Hood, Somervell, Bosque and Hill counties.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 degrees expected for Bosque, Erath, Hill, Hood, Jack, Montague, Palo Pinto, and Somervell counties until 9 p.m. Friday.

"Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," states the NWS.

This warning is in effect until Friday at 9 p.m.

Protect yourself during a heat wave with these tips from the NWS

• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids.

• Stay in an air-conditioned room.

• Check on others: Stay out of the sun, and make sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.

• Protect your little ones and furry friends: Never leave young children and pets alone in vehicles, especially during hot weather when car interiors can become dangerously hot in a matter of minutes.

• Take extra precautions outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, be sure to take additional safety measures.

• Time your activities wisely: When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

• Familiarize yourself with warning signs: Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

• Dress comfortably: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.

For a safer outdoor work environment, follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)'s guidance by scheduling regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places. If anyone shows signs of heat illness, promptly move them to a cool, shaded area. In an emergency, call 911.
