Be prepared for heat index values up to 112 degrees until Friday night
On Thursday at 9:22 p.m. an excessive heat warning was issued by the NWS Fort Worth TX valid from 10 p.m. until Friday 9 p.m. The warning is for Wise, Denton, Collin, Parker, Tarrant, Dallas, Rockwall, Kaufman, Johnson and Ellis counties.
Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 degrees expected for Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise counties until 9 p.m. Friday.
"Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," explains the NWS.
This warning is in effect until Friday at 9 p.m.
NWS Heat Wave Safety Tips: Stay safe with these recommendations
• Stay hydrated: Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
• Seek cool shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.
• Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
• Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles, especially when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.
• Exercise caution outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, take additional safety measures.
• Consider the timing: When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Recognize early indicators: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Dress comfortably: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
