Excessive heat warning issued for North Texas. Temperatures may feel like 112 degrees
An excessive heat warning has been issued for North Texas on Friday.
Tarrant, Dallas, Denton, Collin, Grayson, Fannin, Hunt, Lamar, Delta, Hopkins, Rockwall, Kaufman, Van Zandt and Rains counties are under the excessive heat warning from noon to 9 p.m. Friday.
An excessive heat warning is issued when 105 degree heat index values are present for more than three hours per day for two consecutive days, according to the National Weather Service. If the heat index reached 115 degrees for any amount of time, that would also qualify for the warning.
Heat index values could exceed 112 degrees on Friday in the North Texas counties under the excessive heat warning, according to NWS. The heat index is the “feels like” temperature that is calculated by air temperature and either dew point or relative humidity.
In Dallas-Fort Worth proper, Friday temperatures will be around 102 degrees along with heat index values up to 108 degrees.
Tips for avoiding heat illnesses
The NWS recommends the following to avoid heat-related illnesses:
- Never leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles.
- Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty.
- Spend time in the air conditioning.
- Take frequent rest breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
