Severe storms to hit North Texas bringing hail, damaging winds, ‘low’ chance of tornadoes
Strong to severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail is expected in North Texas overnight Thursday as the first of two cold fronts hit the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The cold front moves into the Metroplex tonight, bringing severe thunderstorms, said Monique Sellers, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office. The next front is expected to arrive Sunday, jolting the region with frigid weather to start the week.
Damaging winds and hail in the Metroplex will be the primary threat from the storm, Sellers said. As for tornado threats, chances are low but non-zero.
“Looks like better chances are going to be slightly further east of the Metroplex,” Sellers said.
The NWS has issued a wind advisory from midnight on Thursday to noon on Friday.
Wind speeds could range from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph possible, Sellers said. Along with chances of severe storms Thursday night, temperatures across the region is bound to take a dip heading into Friday.
Friday morning’s wind chill values will be in the teens, with the high for the day pegged to stay in the 40s.
