Severe weather, ‘very large hail’ forecast with cold front in North Texas Sunday night
A Sunday evening cold front is forecast to bring potentially severe weather to North Texas along with temporary relief from 90-degree temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
The cold front is expected to move into North Texas by around 7 p.m., according to the service. Before that, a heat advisory is in place due to a heat index of 105 to 112.
When the cooler air reaches the region, it is expected to usher in severe thunderstorms producing large to very large hail and wind speeds of up to 70 mph. It could also create flash flooding in some areas and minor flooding east of I-35 and I-35W.
A severe thunderstorm watch that includes Tarrant County, Dallas County and others in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is in effect until 11 p.m. Hail could be as large as 2.5 inches or about tennis ball size.
The severe weather threat is expected to continue until about 3 a.m. Storm chances will continue throughout the day Monday, with the strongest chances being south of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
The relief the storms bring from the heat will be short lived. The National Weather Service predicts highs to jump back into the low- to mid-90s by Tuesday and stay there through Friday. Overnight lows will be in the 60s.
