Severe thunderstorms coming from the north/northwest with strong winds and hail are possible in Dallas-Fort Worth later Thursday night. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms could affect North Texas near the Red River later Thursday afternoon, said Hunter Reeves, meteorologist at the the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office.

If storms do make their way south into the Metroplex, North Texans can expect rain, Reeves said.

“They could come down but most of the storms are expected to be up on the Red River,” Reeves said.

The warming trend this week in North Texas will continue into the weekend, according to the NWS.

Thursday and Friday will be in the mid-90’s, leading to the warmest day of the weekend on Saturday at 97 degrees, Reeves said. Sunday will be in the mid to high 90’s.

Could this be the last gasp of North Texas’ late summer heat?

“I would like to be able to say that, but probably not,” Reeves said. “We don’t typically see true fall weather until maybe October, certainly November.”

True fall weather is typically defined as days with the high temperature being in the low to mid-80’s and the low somewhere in the 60’s.

North Texas likely won’t get that cool next week, but temperatures are expected to drop, Reeves said. North Texans can expect highs in the mid-80 degrees at the start of next week, along with chances of rain.
