Tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds in Thursday weather forecast for North Texas
Showers and thunderstorms that hit Dallas-Fort Worth on Wednesday are expected to be followed by a greater threat of severe weather in North Texas on Thursday.
Some severe storms on Thursday are expected to pack tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
A line of storms is forecast to develop along a rapidly moving cold front during the afternoon/evening commute time.
According to a timeline released Wednesday, storms are expected to develop west of the Metroplex around 3 p.m. Thursday and reach the Dallas-Fort Worth area between 5 and 8 p.m. The greatest potential for severe storms will be in East Texas, east of Dallas County, on Thursday night.
Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday that he directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to prepare state emergency response resources.
“The State of Texas is fully prepared to assist local officials and emergency response personnel on the ground to keep our communities safe,” Abbott said in a statement. “We remain on standby to provide any additional resources that may be necessary over the course of this storm.”
The high temperature on Wednesday was in the upper 70s in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Some large hail was reported with storms Wednesday morning, including quarter-sized hail near Crowley, Everman and Grand Prairie, and stones the size of ping-pong balls near Granbury, according to the weather service.
The timing and location of severe weather threats may change, so residents are advised to watch for updates to the forecast.
There’s an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms and rain on Thursday.
The daytime high will be around 78 degrees.
The rain will be gone by Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth, but it will be breezy and much cooler with highs around 60.
The daytime temperatures will stay in the 60s during the weekend.
