If you noticed hazy skies on your Monday morning commute, there’s one culprit to blame.

“That was west Texas paying us a visit,” said Steve Fano, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Fort Worth office.

Wind speeds of 60 to 70 mph blew into west Texas on Sunday and in turn pushed dust all the way to North Texas, Fano said. Since there isn’t a ton of vegetation growing right now, the wind picked up the dust from the dry fields and blew it east.

AirNow is reporting the air quality in Fort Worth Monday may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as people with heart or lung diseases, older adults and children. People in this group are recommended to choose less strenuous activities and shorten their time outdoors.

As Monday goes on the dust will scatter into the atmosphere and improve both visibility and air quality, Fano said. By Tuesday, clear skies should be on the horizon.

This type of event is common and happens at least once a year, Fano said.
