Where to find warming centers as dangerously cold weather grips North Texas
As dangerously cold weather sweeps over the state, including North Texas, the Texas Division of Emergency Management’s website maps centers for those in need of a warm place to stay.
The National Weather Service on Thursday warned of wind chills as low as 15 below zero in North Texas, conditions that are life-threatening for those who are unsheltered.
Among the warming centers in the region listed on the division’s map as of late Thursday afternoon is the Arlington Life Shelter (325 W Division St. Arlington) in Tarrant County. The shelter opens its doors for 10 people who are unsheltered and/or experiencing homelessness when temperatures drop below 40 degrees, said Kim Eliff, the shelter’s resident assistant. Warming services run from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Warming centers are also show on the map in Dallas, Denton and Collin Counties, as of late Thursday afternoon.
The map is not updated in real time and people should call 2-1-1 for the most recent information, according to the division’s website.
The Salvation Army website also lists North Texas Warming stations.
