Severe thunderstorm watches have been issued for 12 North and West Texas counties Friday night into early Saturday morning.

North Texans will be seeing relief from the record-breaking May heat this weekend, but will need to watch out for possible severe weather.

The 12 counties under a watch include Denton, Wise, Jack and Palo Pinto counties. The watch is expected to expire at 2 a.m. Saturday. Threats include hail up to two inches, wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and possible frequent lightning.

“Isolated to scattered storms are expected to develop along a dry line late [Friday] afternoon. Storms may increase in coverage this evening before dissipating tonight,” the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said Friday. “Large hail and damaging winds are the main threats this afternoon, with damaging winds being the main threat overnight.”

Storms are expected to start west of Dallas-Fort Worth and move into the Metroplex by Friday evening.

A cold front is expected to bring more storms to North Texas on Saturday afternoon and evening. It’s possible to see severe weather continue with strong winds and large hail.

The storms will also bring in cooler temperatures. After weeks of record-breaking highs in the upper 90s and triple digits, temperatures will drop into the 70s and 80s by Monday.

“On Thursday, DFW’s streak of consecutive days of at least 90 degrees reached 13 days. This is the longest such streak this early in the year,” the National Weather Service said. “For the month to date, 2022 is the warmest on record.”

As we enter next week, it’s also possible for the weekend storms to continue. Texans should expect to see “on and off rain chances,” with the greatest rainfall in east Texas, the weather service added.
