Tornado damage reported to high school, homes in Jacksboro; houses in Bowie

Firefighters reported to the National Weather Service that a tornado touched down in Jacksboro about 4 p.m. Monday and has caused “major damage” to a school and homes.

Significant damage to homes and other structures also has been reported in Bowie, in Montague County, where rescue crews were searching to see if anyone was injured.

Bowie City Manager Bert Cunningham told the Associated Press that the worst damage was east of the town, with as many as four entrapments reported. He had no immediate reports of injuries.

The local fire department reported “extensive damage” at Jacksboro High School, according to the weather service. Damage also was reported at Jacksboro Elementary School.

There have been no reports of injuries so far in Jacksboro. School officials told KDFW-TV they were able to get students and staff into storm shelters before the severe weather hit.

Most streets were only illuminated by the blinking hazard lights of residents’ trucks parked along the road to check on their neighbors

Dustin Trevino of Trevino’s Craft Smokehouse in Jacksboro told the Star-Telegram the storm “hit the back half of town — took the roof off the high school — but they’d cleared all the kids out.”

“I always said I wanted to see (a tornado),” he said. “But I don’t ever want to see another one now. Everything got dark. Everything got quiet. Then everything got super loud.”

Photos from WFAA-TV and KXAS-TV showed part of the roof torn off the high school’s gym.

Jacksboro High School Principal Starla Sanders told WFAA, “It brought tears to my eyes. It’s hard to see. I’ve lived here for 15 years. I love this place.”

Sanders told WFAA that all students and staff were safe and “I’m thankful for the way everybody handled things.”

KXAS also reported damage at the Jacksboro Animal Shelter, which was assessing the extent of the damage.

Jacksboro firefighters reported damaged buildings, mobile homes and trees with heavy debris near U.S. Highway 380 and Wesley Chapel Road, about six miles southwest of town, according to the weather service.

A trained weather spotter reported the roof collapsed on a house about a mile west of downtown Jacksboro.

A store owner, Felix Salazar, told KTVT-TV that his sister’s house was destroyed, but that she and her family were not hurt.

Jacksboro is about 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth. A shelter has been set up at the Twin Lakes Activity Center, at 1114 TX-59 in Jacksboro, city police said on social media.

At 4:30 p.m., the City of Bowie Police Department in Montague County, about 70 miles northwest of Fort Worth, reported a tornado southwest of Bowie High School moving northeast, the weather service said.

At 4:41 p.m., the Bowie fire chief reported property damage at a gas plant on Highway 59 south of the city.

Local emergency management officials told the weather service multiple structures were damaged north of Bowie. The reports include a structure collapse on Highway 101, houses “flattened” on Salona Highway, and damage to homes in the area of Brushy Road, Bishop Road and Well Service Road.

The Bowie Community Center behind the rodeo grounds has been opened as an emergency shelter.

A tornado watch continues for much of North Texas through 10 p.m.

In other damage reports, in Palo Pinto County, the fire chief in Santo reported large trees down by the high school gym on Bowie Street.

In Parker County, the Millsap Fire Department reported damage to one structure just north of town about 4:45 p.m.

Near Paradise, in Wise County, a structure was damaged on County Road 4287.

In Cooke County, damage was reported to barns and outbuildings.

Hail was reported in Tarrant County but no major damage after two tornado warnings expired.

Due to inclement weather, the Fort Worth school district has canceled all after-school athletic games for Monday. Athletic practices will continue on a case-by-case basis as determined by each campus.
