Wintry mix possible this week as another cold front moves into Dallas-Fort Worth
A late-season cold front is expected to bring a wintry mix across Dallas-Fort Worth on Thursday and Friday.
Chilly weather started Monday with a low of 35 degrees, and the low will remain in the 30s through Wednesday. On Thursday, most of the daylight hours will be warm, with a high of 72. However, going into Thursday night, the temperature is expected to drop as rain and possibly a wintry mix of precipitation like snow and sleet move into the area, said Jennifer Dunn with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
The precipitation and cold weather are expected to continue into Friday. Accumulation of ice and snow is not expected, Dunn said, but the National Weather Service will continue to watch the weather impact and any changes in weather patterns.
In the current forecast, precipitation will end from west to east by Friday afternoon. Lows Thursday night will range from the low 20s across the Big Country to upper 30s across Central Texas. Highs on Friday will struggle to reach 40 degrees across most of North Texas, according to the weather service website.
A “widespread freeze” is expected Friday night, the National Weather Service of Fort Worth said on Twitter. Low temperatures are expected to fall into the upper teens and 20s, and north winds around 10 to 15 mph will result in wind chills in the teens. Residents are advised to protect “the 4 P’s: pipes, pets, people and plants.”
While it is a bit late in the season for such cold weather, Dunn said it is not unusual.
“It’s not something that happens every year, but not unheard of,” she said.
Along with weather updates, the National Weather Service of Fort Worth is hosting severe weather awareness events on social media platforms this week.
