New Year’s weekend will bring some winter weather to the Dallas-Fort Worth area with temperatures Saturday night in the low to mid 20s, but first there’s a chance of storms in the forecast.

Although Friday will have highs ranging from the upper 60s to around 80 degrees in North Texas, later into the evening residents can expect “numerous showers and thunderstorms,” the National Weather Service said.

“Some strong to severe storms are possible along and north of the I-20 corridor,” the weather service said. “Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary hazards but a tornado or two can’t be ruled out. Storms will end from west to east Saturday with the arrival of a strong cold front.”

“The best storm chances will be in the evening and overnight hours,” the weather service said, adding that temperatures are expected to drop into the 40s and 50s Friday night.

As a welcome into 2022, DFW will be hit with an arctic front.

“Temperatures will fall quickly behind the front, with sub-freezing temperatures expected region-wide by sunrise Sunday,” the National Weather Service said. “Wind chill readings will be in the single digits and teens late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Make preparations now to protect people, pets, pipes, and plants from the sudden cold.”

Throughout Saturday, Fort Worth is expected to see temperatures in the low 60s before it drops to a low around 24 degrees by nightfall. Sunday will be sunny with high temperatures in the low to mid 40s.
