The high temperature in the Dallas-Fort Worth area set a record high of 80 degrees on Thursday, and Friday may also break records, the National Weather Service reported.

After dipping into the 50s and 60s this weekend, temperatures are expected to rise again into the high 70s next week.

Last year set a record high temperature of 79 for Dec. 9, which was broken on Thursday, according to the temperature recorded at DFW Airport.

An 84-degree record for Dec. 10 was recorded in 1938, and could be broken on Friday, when the high is forecast to be around 85.

Alongside the warm weather, North Texas residents can expect dry, but breezy conditions, the weather service said, which may heighten the possibility of grass fires west of Fort Worth near Stephenville, Cisco, Bowie and Hamilton.

Later Friday and into Saturday, residents east and south of Dallas, including Canton, Mexia and Temple, may see rain and thunderstorms.

“A few of the stronger storms could produce winds up to 50 mph, penny-size hail, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning,” the National Weather Service said. “Showers and storms should exit the area by daybreak Saturday.”

Around North and Central Texas, warm weather is expected to continue next week, with Tuesday and Wednesday predicted to be the warmest days.

“High temperatures will be nearly 25 degrees above normal for this time of year,” the weather service said. “There will be a low risk for showers and isolated storms on Wednesday and again on Thursday.”

High temperatures are expected to stay in the high 70s or lower 80s and the weather will remain sunny.
