North Texas under freeze warning Thursday night; cold expected to continue into weekend

North Texans should prepare for freezing weather Thursday night following a cold front that moved into the region Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The service has issued a freeze warning for dozens of North Texas counties, including Tarrant and Dallas Counties, cautioning that temperatures could dip as low as the upper 20s. While the majority of temperatures are expected to be in the mid 30s, the weather service said most in the region should still expect a light freeze overnight Thursday.

The warning is from midnight until 8 a.m. Friday.

The warning means North Texans should bring pets indoors, protect sensitive vegetation and keep anything flammable at least 3 feet away from any space heaters. Check in on loved ones, especially those who might have difficulty caring for themselves in colder weather, and wrap pipes and leave faucets dripping. Sprinklers left on overnight could also lead to dangerous conditions, especially if the sprinklers activate and water freezes, causing slick walking surfaces.

Temperatures this weekend are expected to stay below 70 with the exception of Saturday, when Dallas-Fort Worth is expected to see a high around 73. Another cold front coming in Sunday should lead temperatures to drop back down heading into the next week.

The weather service also said tonight’s lunar eclipse, expected to peak around 3:02 a.m., should be easy to see thanks to clear skies.
