This forecast will not kill mosquitoes. Hot temps, heat index near 100 Sunday, Monday

Shorts, check.

Sandals, check.

Sunscreen, double check.

That’s because hot weather is headed for North Texas on Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

Some Tarrant County neighborhoods could see 100 degrees on Monday.

“This is not completely rare,” said meteorologist Juan Hernandez at the NWS in Fort Worth on Friday, referring to hot temperatures in early May. “We’re getting some warm southwesterly winds ... that will give us the high temperatures.”

North Texans will at least get a nice Saturday with temperatures in the upper 80s.

Then, it’s going to get hot, the kind of weather that mosquitoes enjoy.

Mosquitoes become lethargic at around 60 degrees and can’t function when temperatures are less than 50 degrees., according to a USA Today report.

On Sunday, the forecast is for the mid-90s in Tarrant County. Counties to the west of Fort Worth should see temperatures in the upper 90s. The record high for May 3 is 97 degrees set in 1920, according to the NWS in Fort Worth.

It doesn’t get any better on Monday. Fort Worth will have temperatures in the upper 90s and there could be some triple digits in Tarrant County. The temperatures are forecast to be in the 100s in areas west and northwest of Fort Worth.

The record for May 4 is 100 degrees established in 1947, according to the NWS in Fort Worth.

With humidity, heat index values are expected to be near 100 both days for much of the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Cooler weather returns Tuesday as a cold front arrives in North Texas. The daytime highs will be in the mid-80s on Tuesday.

“It will then be pleasant for the rest of the week,” Hernandez said.
