Fort Worth ISD says dismissal delays possible amid storms; other districts make changes

The Fort Worth Independent School District says some school dismissals could be delayed Friday afternoon due to the forecast of severe weather, after other districts and schools in North Texas altered their schedules by releasing students early or canceling certain activities.

The forecast, which indicates tornadoes are possible, also led to a sharp increase in flight cancellations at local airports and a change to the Dallas Mavericks-Los Angeles Lakers game Friday night to allow fans in early.

As of 2:30 p.m., there were 152 flight cancellations at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday and 67 flight cancellations at Dallas-Love Field Airport, according to the flight tracking service FlightAware. The airports were ranked number and two in the country for canceled flights.

And doors at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, where the Mavericks are set to play at 8:45 p.m., will open early at 6:30 p.m. due to the inclement weather, the team wrote on Twitter.

Fort Worth ISD said on social media schools will monitor conditions and some of them could release at time when the “situation is safer.” The district also said in a separate message all athletic events were canceled Friday evening.

The announcements came as schools across the Dallas-Fort Worth region announced various changes to schedules.
